Agility is a sport for all dogs, big or small, mixed breed or pedigree and all handlers, young and old alike. Best known for featuring on the Tux Wonderdogs program, agility is a fast and furious "game" where handlers direct the dog around a course of obstacles. These obstacles include slalom "weave" poles, seesaws, tunnels, jumps, ramps (otherwise known as contact equipment) and jumping through hoops (tyre jumps). The fastest dog to get around the course without making any errors such as taking the wrong obstacle, knocking jump rails down or incorrectly completing the obstacle (missing a contact area) will win the class. In New Zealand all the dogs of a similar size and skill level compete against one another, but a small dog jumps smaller jumps than a bigger dog.
There are two types of competition, Championship Shows and Ribbon Trials and there is usually at least one show somewhere in the country every weekend . You don't have to be planning to compete at agility shows to come and train with us, many people train their dogs for fun and to help keep themselves and their dog fit and mentally active. You will probably find that once you get started you will be hooked and will end up wanting to try a show anyway. Agility training is available for dogs that are over 12 months of age. It is a physically demanding sport and according to National Dog Training regulations we can not train dogs under this age, nor can dogs compete until they are 18 months of age. If you want to train a dog that is between 12 and 18 months old please be aware that they are subject to some restrictions regarding the height they may jump, heights of contact obstacles and number of weave poles they can complete. Your trainer will be able to tell you more about this.
